School Bells of the Heartland
The Story of Union Center
Union Center Consolidated School District 161, located in
the Township of Island Grove, Gage County, Nebraska, was opened
in the fall of 1917. One of the first rural consolidated school
districts in the state of Nebraska, the school served its community
for 35 years. Once the thread of a community's fabric, the school
building gathered together its people for the festivities of
bountiful harvests and sheltered them through devastating years
of depression, drought and world war. So great an impression
made on the lives of the children who walked those halls, they
continue to find their way home for school reunions nearly five
decades after the doors of the old school closed for the last
time.
School Bells of the Heartland: The Story of Union Center
is a history of the Township of Island Grove, 36 pages filled
with stories and poetry of the people who lived and worked in
the community. It features contributions by Robert Morris, Robert
Mann, Lela Miller, Doris King, and George Riemann. The author,
Jan Eloise Morris, is a 1970 graduate of Southern High School
who spent her childhood in the community.
